The AE2050-008US comes bundled with a few software packages, notably MSI Wind Touch 4, which is a touch overlay in the same vein as HP's TouchSmart or Gateway's TouchPortal. The system comes with 4GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive, both seem to be the minimum, even on inexpensive systems like this. Above the screen is the now ubiquitous web cam for video conferencing and self-portraits.
#Artrage 3.0 720p#
Online 720p HD videos displayed with a minimum of dropped frames and jerkiness (still completely watchable).
#Artrage 3.0 1080p#
This isn't such a bad thing, as the AE2050-008US isn't powerful enough to display 1080p HD videos in full screen mode. The display is only 1,600 by 900 resolution, which is short of the 1,920 by 1,080 resolution of true 1080p HD, but the system will support 1,280 by 720 resolution 720p HD videos. The AE2050-008US has a 20-inch two-point multitouch screen: two-point touch is pretty standard for touch screens these days, allowing the user to use two fingers to swipe, tilt, and zoom on things on screen. There's a Super Charger ultility app on the desktop that switches the port from Super Charger mode to USB 3.0 mode (it's software controlled. You can easily switch the port back if you need two simultaneously operating USB 3.0 ports.) About the only drawback to the Super Charger circuitry is that the port stops being a USB 3.0 data port while it's set to Super Charger mode. You can also charge lower-powered smartphones or media players with the Super Charger port. While all the USB ports function as charging/sync ports for your mobile devices, the Super Charger port still works while the system is powered down, and provides enough current to speed charge high-powered devices including the Apple iPad 2 ($499, 4.5 stars) or RIM BlackBerry PlayBook ($499-$699, 2.5 stars). Once you enable the port using a utility in Windows, the port ceases to be a USB 3.0 port, and then becomes a USB device charging port. That port is the system's Super Charger port. The system's USB 3.0 ports contain more than meets the eye: both look like the standard USB 3.0 port with blue connectors, but the port closer to the screen is different.

If the port was supplemented with an HDMI-in port, you could continue to use the AE2050-008US as a monitor when the system's internal components are obsolete.

If there's any drawback to this setup, aside from the external power brick, it's that the HDMI port is only a HDMI-out port for external monitor support. The four holes surrounding the kickstand will allow you to connect the separately sold VESA mount. The external power adapter is less convenient than built-in power supply units. The right side has a tray-loading DVD burner, and in the back are the system's HDMI-out port, four USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, audio, and the jack for the power adapter. The left of the screen has the desktop's power button, screen brightness controls, two USB 3.0 ports, and a card reader. The overall look is fine, but it is starting to look a bit middle-of-the-road compared with sexier looking systems like the HP TouchSmart 310-1125y ($699 list, 4.5 stars) and Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars). Sliding the keyboard straight in would be more convenient. Unfortunately, the gap requires you to tilt the keyboard in order to store it under the PC. There's a gap at the bottom of the clear plastic that lets you string the wires for the keyboard and mouse through to the back USB ports. Its components are built into the screen, which is surrounded by clear plastic that makes it seem like the screen is hovering above the table. The AE2050-008US follows the styling of previous MSI all in one desktops, like the MSI Wind Top AE2010 ($650 list, 3 stars). For generalists, there are better all-in-one desktops out there, but for cash-strapped art dabblers or novice Raphaels and Van Goghs alike, the Wind Top may be your top choice. The Wind Top's built-in Super Charger port also makes the system a great base station for touch panels like the Apple iPad or BlackBerry PlayBook. The AE2050-008US comes with a full copy of ArtRage 3 Studio, so you can create digital paintings right off the bat. With the inclusion of some interesting art supplies, the MSI Wind Top AE2050-008US ($679.99 list) is a good entry into the world of digital art creation.
